Veteran Australian journalists have remarked that a string of negative incidents should not disrupt Australian-Indonesian relations in the long run.
“Boats, Balibo and the Bali Nine won’t upset relations,” said journalist Hamish McDonald, referring to the controversy of boat people coming to Australia via Indonesia; the unresolved killing of Australian journalists in Dili, then East Timor, in 1975, and the three young Australians on death row in Bali for drug offenses.

Tangerang govt refuses to reopen nightspots

Tangerang govt refuses to reopen nightspots

Multa Fidrus , The Jakarta Post , Tangerang | Sat, 03/20/2010 5:15 PM | Jakarta

Tangerang Mayor Wahidin Halim said Saturday his administration would maintain its closure of nightspots in Pinangsia complex in Karawaci despite the protests from workers.

“No matter who demands the reopening of Pinangsia nightspots, we will keep the places closed forever. The nightspots are illegal,” Wahidin said.

He suggested that the nightspot workers seek other jobs which are “more humane”.

“There are many private firms that need workers in Tangerang municipality. Why do they have to work at nightspots?” he said

Hundreds of Pinangsia nightspot workers rallied outside the mayor’s office on Jl. Satria Sudirman on Wednesday to protest the closure of their workplaces on Jan. 9. The government’s policy has deprived them of jobs and money to feed their families, they said.
